How to Change Firebug Shortcut in Firefox, Mac (OS X)

Jonathan Snook posted a tweet about updating his Firebug shortcuts in the Firefox plugin, and noted it was different than for other plugins. I have been looking for this for a while, so I wanted to post it for all of you.

The problem is, the default shortcut (F12) is a default/common shortcut for your OS X Widget Dashboard. I wanted to keep it this way, but would get annoyed not having a quick keyboard shortcut to open Firebug.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Click the Firebug icon in the lower right corner of Firefox’s status bar to open the Firebug panel
  2. Click the Firebug icon in the top right of the panel
  3. Choose Customize Shortcuts
  4. Scroll to Open Firebug
  5. Delete it’s content and press the combination of keys on your keyboard you’d like to use
  6. Press OK.
  7. Press OK on the next alert to confirm the keyboard shortcut changes
  8. Restart Firefox

This is awesome! i can’t believe I didn’t know firebug had keyboard shortcuts. I’ve always been painfully using the mouse. Now I can remap the problematic shortcuts FF has on OSX with some of my other extensions.
